Nerja, with a population of 20,000, is the principal town of the eastern Costa del Sol. It has developed from a fishing and farming community and is still referred to as 'the village' by the locals. Although tourism has become the main industry, Nerja is still surrounded by farmland where avocados, tomatoes, beans and potatoes are grown and where oxen are still used to plough the land. A small fishing fleet still operates using traditional methods. One of the main attractions of Nerja is the coastline, for here the mountains reach the shore forming imposing cliffs and picturesque coves and beaches. Some of the beaches remain undeveloped and relatively secluded whilst others now include modern services and amenities. Burriana, the most popular of the developed beaches, is a kilometre long stretch of sand with excellent restaurants, bars, sunbeds and water sports. The old town of Nerja remains intact in the centre, with the modern developments on the periphery. The old narrow streets focus on a small headland known as the 'Balcon de Europa' with good views out to sea and along the coast. It is here that everyone takes their evening stroll, lingering over a drink and tapas at the cafe tables while the world goes by. Dining out is one of the pleasures of Nerja. There are, reputedly, five hundred bars and restaurants from which to choose, with prices ranging from about €9 for a three course meal including wine, to about €50 in the more expensive establishments. Nearby attractions include the prehistoric Caves of Nerja (4k, local bus) - these are the third most popular tourist attraction in the whole of Spain. A short drive inland will take you to the unspoilt old Arab towns of Frigiliana (7k), Torrox (9k) and Competa (16k). Granada, with the famous Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountain range is about a 75 minute drive away. Tennis, petanque and many water sports are available in Nerja. Golf is a 25 minute drive away. The weather is another plus for this area . The neighbouring village of Torrox has been designated as having the best climate in Europe. |
